Freedom Park is a 98 acre park located at 1900 East Boulevard just 3 miles from the heart of Downtown Charlotte. The park is a tranquil of peace and a haven for outdoor activities. The park is centered on a 7 acre lake and has paved trails, tennis courts, volleyball courts, sports and athletic and playground equipment.
The Freedom Park was built at the end of World War II by the Mecklenburg County Lions Club to honor veterans. The land was deeded to the city of Charlotte in 1949. The large shelter room at the park which includes a kitchen, fireplace, large public room and other amenities overlooks a beautiful view of the lake and was completed in 2005 for rental use.
It is available for rental purposes for events such as weddings, small sporting events, meetings, and receptions.
Things to do at Freedom Park
Freedom Park is a hub of activity for the entire year. Here are some of the activities you can enjoy here;
Run, Bike or Jog – Freedom Park has paved trails where you can run, ride your bike, jog, skate or roller blade. The Park can get crowded during the weekends as more people come to enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of the Freedom Park while using the trails.
You can run the Little Sugar Creek Greenway that passes through Freedom Park connecting the park to uptown Charlotte to the north and Park Road Shopping Center to the south.
Picnic – if you prefer to take a picnic with your loved ones, then you will love having one here. Freedom Park has five shelters with grills that are perfect for picnicking for the entire family. The shelters offer a great view of the lake and the greenery in the park for memorable moments.
Enjoy performances – do you love live music and artistic performances? Visit the Mahlon Adams pavilion for a dose of live music and other performances throughout the summer. The park also holds annual festivals with hundreds of craft artists, entertainers of all kinds and music bands performing for free.
Noteworthy is the five day festival held every September recognized as a Top 20 event by Southern Tourism Society.
Enjoy sports and games – Freedom Park is home to 4 baseball fields, 12 tennis courts, batting cages, 4 soccer fields, a full-court basketball court, and 2 volleyball courts. You can enjoy playing anyone of the sports that interests you here with your family and loved ones. You can also bring your cheers and enjoy watching teams hosted at the Freedom Park.
Playgrounds – the kids also get to enjoy being at the park. There are two playgrounds fully equipped with equipment that you kids will enjoy or you can just enjoy running and playing other games at the playgrounds.
The NFL Play 60 kidzone is a great start for inspiring kids into the NFL and there is also an antique locomotive replica for the kids to climb on.
Freedom Park is a great place to spend the summer but a beauty to behold and enjoy all year round for the entire family.
